DR. ART SUTHERLAND TO SPEAK AT LUNCH AND LEARN SERIES

Dr. Art Sutherland will speak at the Lunch and Learn Series hosted by Gifts of Life Ministries, Tuesday, November 19, 2013 @ 12:00 p.m.  The church is located at 1542 Jackson Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. Lunch and Learn is a new ministry of the church designed to foster to a better understanding of topics that are germane to people in the community.  Speakers in this series will typically  speak on topics straight from the headlines.  Dr. Sutherland's talk will focus on THE AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE ACT (OBAMACARE). Come out and get your questions answered about the act and how to enroll.

Dr. Sutherland is a retired physician. He is working with The Healthy Memphis Common Table to improving health literacy and to eliminate social disparities and health care inquities.  He is also the Tennessee Coordinator, and a National Board Member of Physicians for a National Health Program-advocating for a Singer-Payer system of national health care reform to cover everyone in our country.  PNHP has been working for health care justice for over 25 years and is on record that "Health Care is a Human Right". Dr. Sutherland lives in Memphis and attends St. Patrick's Catholic Church.  R3 Contributor Gee Joyner will speak at the Lunch and Learn Series hosted by Gifts of Life Ministries, Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 12:00 noon.  The church is located at 1542 Jackson Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee.  Lunch and Learn is a new ministry of the church designed to foster a better understanding of topics that are germane to people in the community.  Speakers in this series will typically speak on topics straight from the headlines.  Professor Joyner's talk will focus on contemporary topics from his newly published book, HE TALK WHITE: THE SCHOLARLY AND ARTISTIC WORKS OF A WRITER.  An anthology of sorts, Joyner's text deconstructs the negative depiction of African Americans in mass media while reconstructing what it means to be Black in America in the 21st century. A collection of op-ed pieces, scholarly essays, and a short story of fiction, "He Talk White" is sure to evoke thought and dialogue concerning the conundrum of race, as well as sexuality and religious affiliation, in the United States.

Gee Joyner is a professor of English at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee and co-producer and host of the web series The Pastor and the Professor.

PASTOR JOHNSON LECTURES AT 50TH YR. MARCH ON WASHINGTON CELEBRATION

R3 Editor Offers Lecture at 

African American Civil War Museum

R3 Editor Dr. Andre E. Johnson will give a lecture on August 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm as part of the 50th year March on Washington celebration at the African American Civil War Museum located at 1925 Vermont Ave. NW in Washington DC. The lecture, "Bishop Henry McNeal Turner and Reflections on the 50th year Anniversary of the March on Washington," will examine Turner's 1913 reflection of the Emancipation Proclamation and point towards the March on Washington that would happen 50 years later. After the lecture, Dr. Johnson will sign copies of his book, The Forgotten Prophet: Bishop Henry McNeal Turner and the African American Prophetic Tradition.  The event is free and open to the public.

Bio of Rev. Dr. Andre Johnson

Rev. Dr. Andre Johnson is the pastor of Gifts of Life Ministries, The Urban Oasis, located at 1542 Jackson. As a called-centered, mission group oriented, servant leadership church, pastor Johnson leads a congregation that last year served over 5,000 meals, clothed over 150 persons, counseled over 60 individuals and families, and visited many sick and incarcerated people. He was born and raised in Memphis, Tenn. and is married to Lisa who is a graduate of the University of Memphis and currently works as a paralegal. 

                                                                               
He serves in the department of Christianity and Culture as the Dr. James L. Netters Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Religion and African American Studies at Memphis Theological Seminary. He teaches classes in contextualized ministry, prophetic rhetoric, black church, African American theology, rhetoric and religion, pulpit rhetoric, race, and hip hop theology. Dr. Johnson also serves as the Director of the Netters Certificate Program in Ministry. In addition to his work at G'Life and Memphis Theology Seminary, he also serves as an instructor in Communications and African American Studies at the University of Memphis.

Dr. Johnson attended the University of Tennessee at Martin where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. He graduated from Memphis Theological Seminary where he took the Masters of Divinity degree and completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Communications at the University of Memphis. His dissertation, "The Prophetic Oratory of Henry McNeal Turner," was under the direction of Michael C. Leff. He is currently editing the works of Henry McNeal Turner under the title The Literary Archive of Henry McNeal Turner. He has published two volumes in the series, "An African American Pastor Before and During the American Civil War," Volume 1 (2010) and Volume 2, the "Chaplain Letters" (2012). The third volume, "An African American Pastor During Reconstruction" is due for publication in 2013.  

In addition to collecting of Turner writings, Dr. Johnson has just published The Forgotten Prophet: Bishop Henry McNeal Turner and the African American Prophetic Tradition (2012). He is also editing a collection of essays on hip hop and spirituality titled, Urban God Talk: Rap, Religion, and a Spirituality of Hip Hop with Lexington Books.

Dr. Johnson has presented academic papers at national, regional, and state conferences winning awards at each level and has published essays in the Memphis Theological Seminary Journal and the Black Theology Journal. The Religious Communication Association recently awarded Dr. Johnson their TopArticle Award for 2011 for his article titled, "The Prophetic Persona of James Cone and the Rhetorical Theology of Black Theology." He currently serves as President of the African American Communication and Culture Division of the National Communication Association and holds membership in several national, regional and state Associations in the areas of Communication, African American and Religious Studies. What are the foundations of the Christian faith and how are they rooted in the Bible? How do we build upon those foundations through our own faith reflections and sharing with others in pastoral contexts? In this course, we will examine central Christian faith convictions in relation to the Bible. We will also consider different approaches to our own work of doing biblically-based theological reflection.
