Holmes Lectures in African American Studies

Join Memphis Theological Seminary as we celebrate the 2014 Dr.Barbara A. Holmes Lectures in African American Studies.

When: February 24-25, 2014

Where: Monday, February 24, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. – St. Paul Baptist Church, 2124 East Holmes Road,
Memphis, TN  38116

Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 11:10 a.m. – Lindenwood Christian Church, 2400 Union Avenue, Memphis, TN  38112

About the speaker: Dr. Jonathan L. Walton

Social ethicist and scholar of American religions Jonathan L. Walton is the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard University and Pusey Minister in Harvard’s Memorial Church. He is also a professor of religion and society on the faculty of divinity.

Professor Walton’s research addresses the intersections of religion, politics and media culture. He has published widely in scholarly journals such as Religion and American Culture: A Journal of Interpretation and Pneuma: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies. His book Watch This! The Ethics and Aesthetics of Black Televangelism (NYU Press, 2009) disrupts commonly held assumptions that associate evangelical broadcasting with white, conservative evangelical communities, while illumining the ways televangelists’ professed aims are frustrated by their hyper-‐mediated methods.

Professor Walton’s work and insights have been featured in several national and international news outlets including the New York Times, CNN and the BBC. He is also the “resident ethicist” on the Tavis Smiley radio show.

Currently he is working on a book-‐length study of famed televangelist Carlton Pearson tentatively entitled Pentecostalism Made Pretty.   The book explores questions of power, privilege and race in the context of late 20th  and early 21st century neo-‐Pentecostalism. He is also completing a volume on African-‐American religious history with Eddie S. Glaude (Princeton University), American Religion in Black and Blue.

Walton earned his Ph.D. and master of divinity degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. And the Atlanta native graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. in political science. Walton was an assistant professor of religious studies at the University of California, Riverside prior to joining the faculty of Harvard Divinity School.

R3 CONTRIBUTOR GEE JOYNER TO SPEAK AT LUNCH AND LEARN SERIES

R3 Contributor Gee Joyner will speak at the Lunch and Learn Series hosted by Gifts of Life Ministries, Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 12:00 noon.  The church is located at 1542 Jackson Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee.  Lunch and Learn is a new ministry of the church designed to foster a better understanding of topics that are germane to people in the community.  Speakers in this series will typically speak on topics straight from the headlines.  Professor Joyner's talk will focus on contemporary topics from his newly published book, HE TALK WHITE: THE SCHOLARLY AND ARTISTIC WORKS OF A WRITER.  An anthology of sorts, Joyner's text deconstructs the negative depiction of African Americans in mass media while reconstructing what it means to be Black in America in the 21st century. A collection of op-ed pieces, scholarly essays, and a short story of fiction, "He Talk White" is sure to evoke thought and dialogue concerning the conundrum of race, as well as sexuality and religious affiliation, in the United States.
