Call Story: Min. April Jackson

Today, we had the pleasure of licensing April Jackson as a minister of the gospel. It was a wonderful service and April preached an awesome sermon as she detailed the trials of Paul and encouraged us with the refrain, "Giving Up Is not an Option." What we share here is a portion of her call story.

by Min. April Jackson

Today has to be one of the proudest, yet the most humbling moments of my life! As I sit here, reflecting over my journey, I can remember back to my teenage years, when I was asked to give a Sunday School Review at First Baptist Church Chelsea, and SEVERAL people told me I would be a minister one day. I shook my head no, thinking that I was just doing what was asked of me.

I remember as a young adult, reading thought provoking devotionals at Christ Communion COGIC, every week during Announcement time, that every one affectionately called "Spiritual Food For Thought". I was told that they were waiting on me to accept my call as an Evangelist Missionary. Again, I shook my head no, as I just liked sharing the devotionals every week.

I remember that, a few years later, all members of Come As You Are Christian Center were required by the Pastor to prepare an Inspired Teaching, developed from a scripture that the Pastor selected. Again, at the end of my Inspired Teaching, people were determined to call me Preacher. Again, I shook my head no, I wanted to leave that title for those who were already in the pulpit.

Then, when I came to Gifts of Life Ministries, I thought I could hide in plain sight for a while, but apparently my gifts appeared, despite my best efforts. Without any single event like the ones mentioned above, I was told that there was a call on my life, and that I was running from it. I wondered what it was they were seeing, because I was trying (and failing) to hide.

I later enrolled in the Netters Certificate of Ministry classes at Memphis Theological Seminary, and at the beginning of each class, I would listen to everyone else introducing themselves as Minister and Reverend and Pastor, and my introduction was always the same...I'm just here to learn and get a deeper understanding of scripture. Even the instructors were giving me the side-eye, saying they were waiting. I wrestled, and I fought, until I had no other choice but to let God have his way.

I accepted God's call, and today, I delivered my first sermon. I would like to take this time to thank EVERYONE who saw something in me, and told me so until I could see it for myself. Recognizing that I am still a work in progress, I can only wonder what God has in store for me. But I do know one thing for sure...GIVING UP IS NOT AN OPTION!

Called Minister to Preach Licensing Sermon

On February 8, 2015, April Jackson accepted and answered her call to preach the gospel. Now, Gifts of Life Ministries is pleased to announce that she is scheduled to preach her licensing sermon. Typically, a licensing sermon is the first formal sermon that a minister preaches. We will hold Mrs. Jackson's sermon on May 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Gifts of Life Ministries, located at 3381 Raleigh-Millington Rd., Memphis, TN. 38128. We invite all to share in this great event!!!

NETTERS CLASSES SUMMER 2015 TERM

ENROLL NOW!!!

Memphis Theological Seminary designed the Netters Certificate in Ministry for persons already active in ministry who are looking for ways to deepen and/or refresh their practice of ministry. Through six courses, participants in this program will develop knowledge and skills in biblical interpretation, relationships between churches, the development of biblical theology, preaching, theology and practice of varieties of ministry, and the building of ministry. To accommodate students, we offer classes on the weekends (Friday Nights and Saturday Mornings) and set the price for each class at only $185. Upon completion of the course, students will graduate with the Netters Certificate in Ministry from Memphis Theological Seminary.
We envision ministers, lay leaders, and potential lay leaders to enroll in these courses. We also see this program as continuing education for seasoned pastors—helping them stay sharp on continuing trends in pastoral ministry. Some may even use this certificate program as a foundational training course for church leaders or part of ordination requirements. Nevertheless, however one decides to use the program, the classes should help students understand more about the ministry they already do and help them discern God’s hand in their ministries.
Below is the schedule for the upcoming classes for Summer 2015. New classes start June 5, 2015 and you can now enroll over the phone by calling 901-458-8232 or 901-334-5817!  This is the first of several new and exciting programs that the Netters Professorship will offer. We pray that you will take advantage of this educational opportunity.

Netters Classes for the Summer 2015 Term

Biblical Theology-Dr. William Rosser-(June 5-July 10, 2015)
What are the foundations of the Christian faith and how are they rooted in the Bible?  How do we build upon those foundations through our own faith reflections and sharing with others in pastoral contexts?  In this course, we will examine central Christian faith convictions in relation to the Bible.  We will also consider different approaches to our own work of doing biblically based theological reflection.

Proclaiming the Word-Dr. Andre Johnson-(June 6-July 11, 2015)
How do we effectively proclaim the Word of God?  How do we prepare and deliver a sermon that will be transformative for our hearers?  In this course, we will explore different ways of preparation for and engaging in the practice of preaching.

Dr. Obery Hendricks to Speak at G'Life

In celebration of Black History Month, Dr. Obery Hendricks will serve as gust speaker at our 8:00am service Sunday February 22. Dr. Hendricks is in town for the Barbara A. Holmes Lectures in African American Studies at Memphis Theological Seminary. Hendricks is one of the foremost commentators on the intersection of religion and politics in America. The scholar Cornel West calls him “one of the last few grand prophetic intellectuals.” Social critic Michael Eric Dyson calls him “one of the greatest intellectuals and most exciting scholars in America today.”

A widely sought lecturer and media spokesperson, Dr. Hendricks’ has appeared on C-SPAN, PBS, National Public Radio, BBC, al-Jazeera Television, NHK Japan Television, Air-America, Radio One, the Voice of America, Fox News, Fox Business News, MSNBC, the Discovery Channel, the Bloomberg Network, and numerous local television and radio programs. He has been a member of the Faith Advisory Council of the Democratic National Committee, where he delivered the closing benediction of the 2008 Democratic Convention; served on the National Religious Leaders Advisory Committee of the 2008 Democratic Presidential campaign and currently serves on the Religion and Foreign Policy Working Group at the U. S. Department of State. He is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Democracy at Work in New York City, an Affiliated Scholar at the Center for American Progress and serves on the board of the Public Religion Research Institute in Washington, DC. Dr. Hendricks is a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post, an occasional contributor to Sojourners magazine and the award-winning Tikkun magazine, and a contributing editor to The Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion. The Dictionary of Biblical Interpretation has called his work “the boldest post-colonial writing ever seen in Western biblical studies.”

“Essential reading for Americans,” is how the Washington Post described Hendricks’ bestselling book, The Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Nature of Jesus’ Teachings and How They Have Been Corrupted (Doubleday, 2006). Michael Dyson proclaimed it “an instant classic” that “immediately thrusts Hendricks into the front ranks of American religious thinkers.” The Politics of Jesus was the featured subject of the 90 minute C-SPAN special, “Class, Politics and Christianity.” His most recent book, The Universe Bends Toward Justice: Radical Reflections on the Bible, the Church and the Body Politic (Orbis, 2011), has been termed a “tour de force” by both scholars and politicians.

A former Wall Street investment executive and past president of Payne Theological Seminary, the oldest African American theological seminary in the United States, Dr. Hendricks is currently a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in the Department of Religion and the Institute for Research in African American Studies, and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Interpretation at New York Theological Seminary. He holds the Master of Divinity with academic honors from Princeton Theological Seminary, and both the M.A. and Ph.D. in Religions of Late Antiquity from Princeton University.
